SMW Tooltip Test

De Semantic MediaWiki - Sandbox

This page verifies Semantic MediaWiki hover tooltips and demonstrates the resource-loading bug reported in SMW issue #7109.

Working baseline on a normal page

Hovering each of the following must show a styled SMW tooltip popup, not just the small native browser tooltip:

Broken case on Special:ExpandTemplates

When a tooltip-rendering parser function is expanded on Special:ExpandTemplates with a context title that points to a normal page, the highlighter markup is produced but the tooltip resource module is never loaded. The two cases look similar at first glance. The link is blue either way, and hovering shows the description text either way, because the highlighter span also carries the description in its plain title attribute. What actually differs on hovering the link in the preview:

  • Working: a bordered SMW popup box with a "Property" header line appears immediately.
  • Broken: no such box; after about a second the browser shows its small plain grey title tooltip with the same text.

Definitive check that does not rely on looks: run mw.loader.getState( 'ext.smw.tooltip' ) in the browser console (F12). It returns "ready" on the working page and only "registered" on the broken page. If it returns "ready" on both pages, something tied to your account loads the tooltip module on every page and masks the bug, e.g. the SMW job-queue watchlist item (ⅉ) in the personal bar, whose ext.smw.personal module depends on the tooltip module. Retest logged out or in a private window.

The same happens with {{#info:}}, which shares the resource-commit code path, so the defect is older than the parser function from the issue:

What to look for technically

In the broken case the page HTML contains the smw-highlighter markup but ext.smw.tooltip is missing from RLPAGEMODULES. In the working case the module is listed and the styled popup appears.
